Sony released its 2013 flagship device – the Xperia Z earlier this year, and is now reportedly preparing to launch another flagship Xperia smartphone soon. XperiaBlog, the unofficial source for all Sony Mobile related news, reports that the purported device would be called the Xperia ZR.
Bearing the model number C550x, the Xperia ZR will pack a 4.6 inch 720p display, which is just a step down from the Full HD 1080p display found on the Xperia Z. The Xperia ZR will also house either a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro or a Snapdragon 600 chipset. The Xperia Z incidentally, comes with the Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, and it may well be possible that Sony wants to go with the newer and more efficient Snapdragon 600 this time. The device will also feature a 13MP camera, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot and a 2300 mAH battery. In terms of water resistance, the Xperia ZR will be able to withstand water levels of more than 5 feet for upto 30 minutes without the risk of any water damage. The Xperia ZR will also be come with IP55/IP58 rating similar to Xperia Z’s IP55/IP57 rating for superior levels of dust and water resistance.
Going by these specs, the Xperia ZR does not appear to be too different from the Xperia Z, barring the smaller 720p screen and the reduced internal storage capacity. It looks like this is Sony’s attempt to bridge the gap between the high-end Xperia Z/ZL and the mid-range/entry level offerings – Sony Xperia SP/Xperia L. The Xperia ZR will also share a similar design as the Xperia ZL, but will come with glass back which is found on the Xperia Z. There are no details yet on exactly when Sony intends to launch this device, but we are guessing that Q3 2013 would be likely. This new device is likely to find a lot of takers, as it might well be priced at a more affordable price point than its elder sibling – the Xperia Z.
That’s all we have on the Xperia ZR for now. We’ll be keeping our eyes and ears tuned in for any more details on this fella, and will keep you posted in case something comes our way. Stay tuned and watch this space.
