Remember the Flying Androids Easter egg Google had concealed with Ice Cream Sandwich, and the floating Jelly Beans in Android 4.1. For the uninitiated, repeatedly tapping the Android Version in Settings > About Phone would reveal the concealed animation, which would otherwise not be visible on the device. Well, in Android 4.2, Google has gone one step ahead with the easter egg and added a new goodie which is quite useful, and must we say – looks really cool.
A little background first. In Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, going to the About Phone menu and repeatedly tapping the Android OS version brings up a new screen with a Jelly bean Face, and the OS version displayed under it. Tapping and holding your finger on the JB face makes the display change to an assortment of different colored Jelly Beans floating around on your screen, which you could flick away with your fingers. In Android 4.2, Google introduced the Daydream feature, which was essentially a screen saver mode that automatically kicks in when your device is docked, or being charged. But that’s not all. Daydream allowed you to choose from various options in as to what would be displayed when in Daydream Mode. You could choose between the clock, just random colors, or even your Google Currents feed. Well, it turns out that there is another option for Daydream, which lies hidden, and is only revealed after you unlock the Easter Egg!
Yes, unlocking the Jelly Bean Easter egg, adds a new option to Daydream called Beanfinger. Beanfinger is essentially the floating Jelly Beans animation, and you can flick away those colorful little Jelly Beans on your screen while in Daydream mode. If you’re on Android 4.2 or higher, this is a pretty cool feature to show off to your friends, who are probably still languishing on Android 4.1 or possibly older versions of Android.
Here’s how you can enable the Bean finger animation in Daydream on your Android 4.2 device:
- Go to Settings > About Device. Tap the Android OS version repeatedly.
- You should see the display change to a Jelly Bean face with your OS version under it
- Tap and hold the Jelly bean face till the display changes to the Beanfinger animation
- Press back to exit the animation and return to the About Phone menu
- Go to Settings > Display > Daydream
- Bam! You should now see the Beanfinger Option added in Daydream.
